KATHMANDU: At least 24 people were injured on Tuesday when riot police charged protesters with batons during a demonstration held by students, witnesses and students said. The seven students’ held the demonstration and youth factions demanding Nepal’s King Gyanendra reverse his dismissal of the elected government in October 2002.
"The angry students and the riot police clashed at many places in Kathmandu Tuesday evening and about six journalists, including photographers, who had gone to the spot to collect news were injured in police baton charges," Rishi Dhamala, president of the Reporters’ Club Nepal, said.
A dozen students and six policemen were also among the injured. Witnesses said the students also burnt tyres at several places in the Nepalese capital during the demonstration. The demonstration was held despite a recent government ban against protests.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Jagdish Chand told AFP that officers were forced to resort to baton charges after the students struck police inspector Kanchan Thapa and another policeman with bricks Tuesday evening.
"The inspector and another policeman were injured after they were hit on their heads by the bricks thrown by the students," Chand said.
"The students also damaged about four or five government vehicles during their demonstration," Chand said. The students have the backing of Nepal’s major parties that have held months of protests demanding new elections.
